Why Families Ask About Inheritance Tax

Properties have climbed steadily for two decades. A terraced house bought in Roath or Canton years ago, plus a pension and some savings, can be enough to bring an estate within inheritance tax thresholds, making it important to understand your position.

The rules are not always intuitive. The Nil Rate Band, the Residence Nil Rate Band that can apply when a home passes to direct descendants, and the seven-year period that affects some lifetime gifts all interact in ways that are easy to misread. Our role is to explain how these work in plain terms, help you see where your estate sits, and be honest about when your circumstances call for specialist input.

A word of straight talk: inheritance tax can be complex, and the right answer depends on your full financial picture. Where an estate is complicated or sizeable, we will tell you plainly and help you find independent or regulated specialist advice, rather than overstating what a will or a standard trust can do on its own.

Local, Friendly Support in Cardiff

We are a local service, and looking after families well is what we care about most. In 2022 we were named Best Legacy Planning Services Provider for Wales at the European Enterprise Awards, which meant a great deal to us as recognition of the care and attention we give to the people we sit down with.

Every appointment starts with a conversation about your life, not a form. From there, we can help you understand the parts of estate planning that households often ask about:

  • How the Nil Rate Band and the Residence Nil Rate Band may apply to your estate, explained in plain terms.
  • How some lifetime gifts are affected by the seven years, so you understand the timing involved.
  • How wills, trusts and powers of attorney fit together and where each one does and does not help.
  • When your situation is better served by an independent or regulated specialist, we will always tell you honestly.

FAQs

  • Do most families in Cardiff actually need to worry about inheritance tax?

More families than you'd think. The standard nil rate band is £325,000 per person, and with property values having risen steadily, many estates now creep past this threshold once you add savings, investments and life insurance into the mix. If you own a home, you may also be able to claim the residence nil rate band of £175,000 on top, which can take a couple's combined tax-free allowance up to £1 million. A short conversation with an adviser is often enough to tell you where you stand.

  • What's the most straightforward way to reduce an inheritance tax bill?

Careful, early planning usually makes the biggest difference. This can include making use of your annual gift allowances, leaving assets to a spouse or civil partner (which are exempt from inheritance tax), or structuring your will so both halves of a couple's nil rate bands are used efficiently. Every case is different, so we always recommend a proper review of your circumstances rather than a one-size-fits-all fix.

  • If I give money to my children now, could it still be taxed later?

Possibly, yes. Gifts made more than seven years before you die are usually free of inheritance tax, but anything given away within seven years may still count towards your estate, with taper relief reducing the tax owed the longer you survive after the gift. It's a rule that catches people out, which is why we encourage clients considering inheritance tax planning in Cardiff to keep clear records of what they've given and when.

  • My family owns a small business near Cardiff. Does that change our inheritance tax position?

It can. Business property relief has historically offered generous protection for trading businesses, but the rules changed from April 2026 so that 100% relief now only applies to the first £2.5 million of combined qualifying business and agricultural assets per person, with anything above that receiving 50% relief. If a family business forms a meaningful part of your estate, it's worth having this reviewed properly rather than assuming the old rules still apply in full.
