How a Trust Works Alongside Your Will
A will sets out who inherits, and for many families, that is all they need. A trust works alongside it, deciding how and when your assets pass on and keeping them safe in the meantime. You set the rules, you can act as a trustee, and daily life carries on just as before.
That extra layer earns its keep out here, where estates are so often tied up in land, outbuildings or a home that has grown in value over the decades. Couples who own their home jointly often add a will trust to protect each partner's share for the children, while a lifetime trust starts working the day it is signed and, set up early, can ease
inheritance tax on a growing estate.

When a Trust Earns its Keep
Plenty of families are perfectly well served by a will alone, and we would never push you towards something you do not need. A trust proves its worth in a handful of situations.
It can keep land and property together, holding a farm, smallholding or family home as one rather than seeing it split or sold and protecting a child's share should they ever divorce or hit money trouble. It can protect assets if a beneficiary files for bankruptcy. It can sometimes help with the cost of long-term care, though only when arranged honestly and well ahead of time. And a lifetime trust, set up early, can ease the inheritance tax bill your family eventually meets.
No two estates look alike, so every trust in West Wales we arrange starts with a real conversation, not a form pulled off a shelf. Many clients also ask us to put a lasting power of attorney in place or update their will in the same sitting.

FAQs
How much does it cost to set up a trust?
Every trust is quoted as a fixed fee, written down and agreed before any work starts, because the right structure depends on your assets and your aims. Your first consultation is free and carries no obligation, so you will know the full cost and exactly what it covers before deciding on anything.
Can a trust keep our family farm or land together?
Often, yes. A trust can hold agricultural land, outbuildings or a family home on terms you set, helping it pass on as a whole instead of being divided. Where farmland is involved, there may be tax reliefs worth planning around too, and we talk all of it through with you first.
Will a trust protect my home from care fees?
Sometimes, but only when it is set up for genuine reasons and well before care is on the horizon. If a council believes assets were moved purely to dodge fees, the trust can be set aside, so we give you an honest read on what a trust in West Wales can realistically achieve for you.
Do I lose control of my assets once they are in a trust?
Not at all. You write the rules when the trust is created, including who benefits and when, and you can sit as a trustee yourself. It changes the legal ownership for protection purposes while you carry on living just as you do now.
