What an LPA Actually Does
A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document that gives a named person (or persons) the power to make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself. Hopefully it will never be needed, but it is a great way of giving yourself peace of mind and assurances about your future. There are two different types of LPA:
An LPA is the document that gives a named person, or several, the authority to act for you once you are no longer able to act for yourself. You hope it sits in a drawer untouched, but having it ready means your family is never left scrambling or forced into a long and costly application to the Court of Protection. There are two kinds, and most people we visit choose to set up both.
A Property and Financial Affairs LPA covers the practical side of life, giving your chosen attorney access to your bank accounts, bills, pension and property, so nothing grinds to a halt if you are in hospital or simply unable to deal with it yourself. A Health and Welfare LPA reaches further into the personal decisions, from your day-to-day care and where you live to medical treatment, and it only ever comes into force once you can no longer make those calls. Whoever you appoint must be over 18 and is often a spouse, an adult child, another relative or a close friend you would trust with anything.
If you are reviewing your wider plans, an LPA sits naturally alongside a
properly written will, and many clients arrange both together.

FAQs
When should I set up an LPA?
While you are fit and well, an LPA can only be made by someone who still has the capacity to understand it. Leaving it too late is the one mistake we cannot undo for you, so it is far better to have it ready and never need it.
Can one person handle both of my LPAs?
Yes, and many people appoint the same trusted person for both their finances and their health decisions, though you are free to name different attorneys or several acting together. We help you weigh up what fits your family during your appointment.
Do you draw up LPAs across the whole of West Wales?
We do. We cover Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion in person, seven days a week, and offer phone or video appointments wherever a home visit is impractical, all on the same fixed fee.
How is an LPA different from a will?
A will takes effect after you die, while a lasting powers of attorney protects you during your lifetime, should you ever be unable to make decisions yourself. The two work hand in hand, which is why so many people put both in place in the same sitting.
